Actually, a PhD is not required for a scientist.

In 1905 Einstein published his papers on Special Relativity and Light-Quanta (photons) before he had a PhD.

A scientist is defined by what he/she does.

A sheepskin tacked on the wall can be useful for getting published or obtaining grant money, but a scientist does not need one to explore nature.
