The present cultural situation in the USA, as typified by the stranger-than-fiction presidential race this cycle, reminds me of a quotation by Einstein written before he wisely decamped from Germany before the well-digested food hit the fan.

“I begin to feel comfortable amid the present insane tumult, in conscious detachment from all things which preoccupy the crazy community. Why should one not be able to live contentedly as a member of the service personnel in the lunatic asylum? After all, one respects the lunatics as the ones for whom the building in which one lives exists.” A. Einstein (in A.Pais, ‘Subtle is the lord…’, p.243)
