I like the supernova analogy for modeling the Big Bang.

But I envision a metagalactic scale supernova wherein our the size of our whole observable universe is virtually infinitesimal compared to the system that went supernova.

At any rate, a supernova is a thermonuclear detonation, albeit on energy and space-time scales that we can hardly imagine.

Another question to ponder: If the Big Bang is not an explosion, but rather the global expansion of space-time, then why do atoms, stars and galaxies not expand too? Why are bound systems exempt from the cosmological expansion?
