Investment? Sure But Structural Reform Is Primary

Another book that should be read by anyone who wants to know why America and other countries have ended up with so much economic inequality and political malfeasance is Nancy MacLean’s perceptive Democracy In Chains.

If one does not have the means to procure this book or sufficient motivation to seek a real understanding of our miserable situation, here is a brief synopsis as a teaser.

The far-right has slowly but surely changed the rules of government so the 1% can prosper at the expense of the 99%. This is done by voter suppression, degrading public education, skewed and easily gamed tax codes benefiting the super-rich, packing the courts with like-minded ultra-conservative judges, gerrymandering, dismantling environmental programs, attacking health care systems and removing social safety nets.

Word salads and kumbaya choruses are not going to get us out of this mess. It is going to take a concerted education of the people about what has brought us to this point, and a willingness of the majority to show up and vote the weasels out of office.

Simply investing is not enough. We need structural change brought about by leaders with true integrity.
