New York Times Article On Particle Physics Doldrums

Nice review of the sad situation at the LHC these days by Dennis Overbye.

Most theoretical physicists feel like this: “These are difficult times for the theorists,” Gian Giudice, the head of CERN’s theory department, said. “Our hopes seem to have been shattered. We have not found what we wanted.”

Assorted wingnuts like Kane and Ellis are still hyping the continued search for the pot of supersymmetry “sparticles” waiting at the end of some higher energy rainbow. Those with even less of a grip on reality hold out hope for the FantasyLand gambit, i.e., the thoroughly unscientific “Multiverse”.

Anyone with two working hemispheres knows that radical new ideas are desperately needed in theoretical physics.
