Pilot-Wave theories can reproduce QM results in a deterministic space-time framework (de Broglie/Bohm theories). Bush and Couder have experimentally demonstrated that a classical pilot wave set-up can reproduce QM-like interference results and quantized orbitals, etc., which were previously thought to be strictly forbidden for classical models. Stochastic Electrodynamics invoking zero-point energy and vacuum fluctuations are a third interesting and physically realistic pilot-wave approach.
It is likely that the best pilot-wave theory is yet to come. In my opinion there is definitely an urgent need for this alternative paradigm for understanding the actual physics of the microcosm in a way that makes conceptual sense and can be fully tested.
