T.S. Kuhn wrote a book called The Structure of Scientific Revolutions that described the situations with dominant paradigms and their collapse in the face of conflicting evidence and a better replacement paradigm.

The Standard Models of particle physics and cosmology have been “perfected” by 1000s of physicists over decades, but serious problems have cropped up and are getting worse and more numerous.

We are long overdue for paradigm change and only the right catalyst is needed. Personally, I think the unveiling of the enigmatic dark matter as something totally unexpected by Standard Model buffs and inconsistent with their models will be that catalyst.
