I agree with your point. Most scientists are fairly well educated, skilled at critical thinking, and try to practice enlightened self-interest. Skills that are in short supply in politics today. We need them more than ever.

On the other hand scientists, like any other human group, have their bad apples who are wildly inappropriate for governance. So the voter needs to be informed and wary of demagoguery.
